Three-Day Suspension Lifted

I apologize that it's been a few days since my last post. I levied a three-day suspension on myself after that embarrassing prediction for the Fiesta Bowl. Although, it's not easy to miss a pick by 51 points. That's pretty impressive.

I was at 30,000-feet eating mini-pretzels and watching Mr. Woodcock as I plane, train and bussed my way from Phoenix to Chicago and tried to make sense in my head of the Fiesta fiasco I had just witnessed.

Biggest Winner = Bill Stewart. Congrats to him. He seems like a genuinely nice guy.

Biggest Loser = DeMarcus Granger. He's stained his reputation for a long time.

Biggest Loser Part 2 = Bob Stoops. "Big Game" Bob's tag has definitely lost some luster after four-straight BCS setbacks.

Biggest Loser Parts 3 & 4 = Steve Slaton and Malcolm Kelly...two projected 1st-round draft picks who must now fight hamstring injuries.

I think the lesson of the night is this. With college kids you just never know. Tom Brady and Peyton Manning and Kobe Bryant and Josh Beckett are machines. Their performances are repeatable and predictable. That's what makes collegiate athletics so great.

How can the OU team that hammered Missouri be the same team that was humbled Wednesday night? How did the 2003 team get pasted by K-State? How did Stanford beat USC? How did NC State beat Houston, and Nova beat Georgetown...and on and on and on? It's because kids aren't robots. They're live wires of emotion and hormones with acne and girlfriend problems. A+B doesn't always equal C in college sports.

It made sense that the Sooners would handle the West Virginians with ease. But then a kid comes up short on grades, another swipes a jacket, another pulls a hammy, a kick only goes nine yards, a DB gets caught peeking into the backfield and...48-28...the non-sensical happens.

And to be honest, I wouldn't want college sports to be any other way.
