Soldier attacked by gun-wielding assailant

Posted: Updated:

An Oklahoma National Guardsman said a gun-wielding assailant attacked him in a southside hotel room during a New Year's Eve party.

Alex Evans is a Member of 45th Infantry Brigade who was home for 10 days on Christmas break. He was hosting a New Year's Eve party when shortly after midnight a man armed with a gun approached his uncle and took aim.

"I grabbed the gun so he couldn't fire it, and that's when he hit me with it," Evans said.

He was hit several times with the gun, his injuries required a number of staples.

"I had four lacerations here on the back of the head because all they could get was a glancing blow because I was hugging him close," Evans said.

Alex's family says he saved his uncle's life, but it's not the first time he's been called a hero.

Alex and two other friends saved a man from a burning home on Christmas Eve.

Twice he's been hailed a hero but he says the real heroic work will begin when he goes overseas to serve his country.

"I'm ready for it. I'm ready to get there, get done and come back," Evans said.
