The Lake Hefner Dam road and trail between Britton Road and Old Lakeshore Drive will be closed for about six months beginning in Jan. 2 for repairs, said a press release from Oklahoma City's Public Information and Marketing office.
"We realize the road closing will inconvenience the citizens who enjoy walking, biking or fishing on the north side of Lake Hefner," said Marsha Slaughter, Utilities Department director, in the press release. "We looked for ways to avoid closing the trail during the project, but the road is too narrow to safely allow construction and recreational activity."
Erosion along the bank is the reason for the construction work. Over a number of years the guardrails have become damaged, but last summer's excessive rains caused and even greater shift in soil. The soil shift also caused the dam face to begin sloughing off.
The dam is not in any immediate danger and these repairs are solely to ensure the integrity of the dam and to prevent further deterioration, the press release said.
The construction project will create an additional riprap dropping large rocks about every 50 feet along the lake banks to stop erosion on the lakeside of the dam. The project will also provide the following:
The closure will not cause traffic detours outside the lake property.
