The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says Hanger pulled over McVeigh just 78 minutes after the Alfred P. Murrah federal building bombing.

The stop and arrest happened in the northbound lanes of I-35 near mile marker 202, where the sign honoring Hanger will be placed on Friday.

At the time, Hanger said he pulled McVeigh over after he noticed McVeigh’s car didn’t have a license plate.

During the stop, McVeigh told Hanger he had a weapon. Hanger then reached up to grab the bulge on the outside of McVeigh’s jacket.

"I'm spinning him around and telling him, 'Get your hands up!' I pull my weapon, and I stick it to the back of his head," Hanger told News 9 in a 2020 interview.

Hanger guided McVeigh to the back of his car. McVeigh then said, "My weapon is loaded," prompting Lieutenant Hanger to nudge him in the back of the head with his pistol and say "Well, so is mine."

A search revealed McVeigh was armed with a pistol, an extra magazine and a knife.
