In order to keep emergency phone lines clear, the City of Oklahoma City is asking residents to report illegal fireworks through the appropriate channels.
Although the city said it is acceptable to call 911 in case of a firework-related injury or fire, calls reporting the illegal use of fireworks within Oklahoma City limits can quickly clog the city's emergency dispatch.
“Complaints about fireworks overload 911 phone lines and can keep people experiencing an emergency from quickly connecting with a dispatcher,” Oklahoma City Fire Chief Richard Kelley said.
It’s illegal to buy, sell or use fireworks in the City of Oklahoma City. Other types of fireworks, including sparklers, snakes and bottle rockets, are also included in the ban. The ban applies to all private and public property in Oklahoma City, including parks, lakes and areas along the Oklahoma River.
If residents know the address of someone illegally launching fireworks, they can report the violation by calling the Fireworks Hotline at (405) 297-2222 between June 28 and July 8, emailing action.center@okc.gov or by texting (405) 252-1053.
City officials said they will follow up on complaints.
“Fireworks are a serious safety hazard to people and property and should be left to professional shows,” Kelley said.
Violators of the City’s fireworks ordinances are subject to a fine of $500, confiscation of fireworks and a possible jail sentence.
