Some People who hiked Turkey Mountain today are thankful for more than just the exercise.

They found prizes in the park's scavenger hunt, which was postponed a week due to the weather.

For some hikers it was better late than never.

"This is a great place to come," hiker Tina Fountain said. "As far as I know, this is the best place in Tulsa to hike and to be able to get some exercise."

Climbing down all these hills and stones is already a workout enough, but for some people, they found a little prize in the end that made it all worth it.

"We enticed them by hiding prizes in the woods that they can come and find," Ryan Howell with River Parks said.

Organizers hid water bottles, t-shirts stickers and more as a fun way to encourage people to hike.

"I think it's a great idea," Fountain said. "I mean I think there was people up there today that wouldn't normally hike that thought...oh I'll bring my kids. You know they can get a prize. So, it may be a way to get them into hiking."

Howell with says once they started promoting it on Facebook, it gained traction fast.

"We were just really surprised at how popular it was in terms of like Facebook responses and shares and likes and everybody saying they're coming and stuff like that," Howell said. "So, we were really blown away by it."

Howell says these interactive events do as much good for the city as the workout these hikers get after a long walk.

"The more people that we can get out here to experience nature and experience this park, the better for Tulsa," Howell said. "Just overall it improves everybody's quality of life."

The First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative to encourage people to get outdoors.
