A man was arrested after police said he stole from multiple mailboxes and cars around the city.

Officers said they found him with pieces of mail in his backpack.

Investigators were out on a patrol in the area the thefts were when they spotted a man with a familiar backpack.

"[They] recognized that the backpack matched in several different other occurrences," said Sarah Jensen, Norman police spokeswoman.

Norman police said they saw Adeshola Pedro on Tuesday near the 2900 Student Apartments on Constitution Street and Oak Tree Avenue with that backpack.

Police stopped to question him and looked inside the bag.

"There were 128 pieces of mail and other small items that belong to individuals that were stolen out of mailboxes or vehicles over the last several days and weeks," said Jensen.

The pieces of mail included things like credit cards, documents with personal information and gift cards.

"He was looking at things he could grab quickly, maybe unlocked vehicles. Things that he could see and grab and move on quickly to the next vehicle or the next mailbox," Jensen explained.

Pedro didn't give police his name right away, and handed police someone else's old state ID.

Police said the thefts they think Pedro is responsible for are all around central Norman. Many of the places were apartment complexes.

Norman police said they spotted Pedro while in the middle of the theft investigation.

"As they were actually viewing surveillance video in regard to one of the locations that was hit. They identified a suspect that was currently on the property," Jensen said.

Police arrested Pedro on several complaints including theft, obstructing an officer and drug-related complaints. Police said they found paraphernalia for meth and heroine in the backpack as well.
