The Coweta Tigers are set to host the McAlester Buffaloes in a much-anticipated meeting between two unbeaten high school football teams just days after a tornado touched down nearby. The district said students and other community members helped play a part in getting the field cleaned up.

Jeff Holmes, Coweta Public Schools superintendent, said debris was scattered across the field after the tornado. A nearby school and the baseball field suffered a lot of damage, but signs were mostly knocked down at the football stadium.

Holmes said the scoreboard, lights and game clocks were all checked after the storm and the stadium is ready to go. He said a lot of the debris was cleaned up by student-athletes, FFA kids and band members just hours after the tornado hit.

“What it looked like at sunrise Monday morning and what it looked like at 10:00 were night and day, I mean it was just totally different,” said Holmes. “So many people helping so quickly.”

The Coweta football team and band were both able to resume practice on Monday.

“Just talking to our coaches and our band director as well, both of them were talking about how this storm has brought the students together,” said Holmes. “The kids feel a sense of urgency and pride and commitment.”

Thursday night’s game is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
