OU and Texas sent the Southeastern Conference commissioner an expression of interest, the universities said in a joint statement.

Both universities sent the request Tuesday morning to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey.

"The two universities look forward to the prospect of discussions regarding the matter," the joint statement said in part.

In the expression of interest letter, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas at Austin requested invitations for membership to the SEC starting on July 1, 2025.

"We believe that there would be mutual benefit to the Universities on the one hand, and the SEC on the other hand, for the Universities to become members of the SEC. We look forward to the prospect of discussions regarding this matter," stated and signed by OU President Joseph Harroz, Jr., and Texas President Jay Hartzell.

The SEC released a statement after news of the request was made.
