An Oklahoma City student athlete was killed in a shooting at a park near downtown, police said.

The victim was identified as 16-year-old Victor Felix-Loya. Police confirmed another teenager was shot but is expected to survive.

The deadly shooting happened on Thursday at Wheeler Park near Interstate 40 and South Western Avenue. It is the fourth homicide in less than a month involving a victim under the age of 18.

“We’ve seen an inordinately high number of them in the last few weeks,” said Master Sgt. Gary Knight, Oklahoma City Police Department.

Felix-Loya was a soccer player at Northwest Classen High School, according to the Oklahoma City Public School District's Facebook page. The teen was recently featured as the athlete of the week by The Oklahoman.

“Sadly, as the first officers arrived, they discovered a deceased male laying in the parking lot. It appeared he had been shot to death,” Knight said.

Witnesses in the area reportedly heard 20 to 30 gunshots. Knight said another teen victim from the same shooting showed up to St. Anthony Hospital a short time later.

“He was treated and released,” said Knight. “(He's) Expected to be just fine.”

Felix-Loya's family and friends waited outside police headquarters Friday morning. Many of them were unable to hold back their grief. His loved ones want answers on who may be responsible.

“We believe that some sort of heated argument took place,” said Knight. “It escalated to the point where at least two people were firing guns. There have not been any arrests made, nor have we identified a suspect at this time.”

The public is urged to contact the homicide tip line at 405-297-1200 if they have information that could help the investigation.
