A scam caller is reportedly impersonating a Newcastle police officer, the department reported Tuesday.

The Newcastle Police Department is investigating an incident that happened after 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said a caller identified themselves as a Newcastle police officer in an attempt to scam family members into a meeting to pick up a family member.

The caller identified themselves as "Officer Mitchell" and gave a fake badge number.

The department does not have an officer Mitchell.

When the family questioned the caller, he said he was a drug dealer and needed them to meet them at the Newcastle casino and a female was heard screaming in the background.

The family member mentioned by the caller was contacted and is not in danger.
