A Tulsa resident is honoring his father's legacy by helping dads write letters of love to their children.

Blake Brewer said he got the idea after he found a letter from his father just hours after his dad’s drowning.

"May 23, 2003 was absolutely the worst day of my life," Brewer said.

Brewer was back from his first year of college vacationing with his family in Hawaii when he and his dad, Larry Brewer, went snorkeling in a place Blake later learned was called "Witches Brew."

Brewer said the water became treacherous and the two were separated. He tried to save his dad, but it was too late.

His mom gave him a letter later that afternoon written by his dad—something Larry planned to give Blake on their trip.

"Here I am reading this letter that my dad wrote to me that would end up becoming his last words," Brewer said.

Brewer said the letter got him through the tragedy and different phases of life. He believes his dad is guiding him to this day.

"He encouraged me to persevere through trials, to have courage, to live with a purpose,” Brewer said.

Brewer founded The Endurance and said he's on a mission to help one million dads write a legacy letter to their kids.

"From that day forward, I had a mission,” Brewer said. “I had a life purpose. I've realized how important a father's voice is in a child's life."

Brewer started the Legacy Letter Challenge, a four-week online course that helps dads write a meaningful letter to their child.

Brewer said a lot of dads just need help organizing their thoughts and expressing them.

"Let's get that letter from your heart to your mind to a piece of paper,” Brewer said.

Blake said his dad was known for being a successful businessman as wells as Super Bowl champion Terry Bradshaw's tight end when the two were teammates at Louisiana Tech. Larry went on to play for the Atlanta Falcons.

"But what I remember my dad for was just being a dad,” Brewer said. “My dad was my dad, and I loved my dad."
