A 12-year-old boy was shot and killed at a Midwest City apartment complex, police said.

Roland Jones was shot and killed on Sept. 30 at the Sand Hills Apartments.

According to witnesses, several kids were hanging out in front of an apartment in the complex when a shot was fired. The kids all fled and Jones was found with a gunshot wound.

Officials noted bystanders tried to render first aid to the 12-year-old. He was taken to a hospital where he died.

On Saturday, Roy Jones plans to hold the funeral for his son.

“This is just tough,” said Roy Jones, Roland’s father.

Roy Jones said his son was an avid boxer and loved to play basketball. His would turned 13 later this month.

Roy Jones had reported Roland as a runaway the Monday before the shooting when he left the house and never came back. That was the last time he saw him.

"What people called red flags, they are moments where kids are saying something and doing something. You can adjust and make a difference, and as a parent, I didn’t see it,” he said.

With the unexpected burial, the family is working to gather the funeral funds. If you would like to donate to the family, you can do so on their GoFundMe page.

So far, no arrests have been made in this case.

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call the Midwest City police at 405-739-1388 or 405-739-1306.
