U.S. Rep. Kendra Horn said it’s time to do away with the Trump administration tax cuts for individuals earning more than $400,000.

She said that money should instead be going toward doubling the Earned Income Tax Credit.

The credit benefits people working low-wage jobs and is designed to encourage work and help low-income families avoid poverty.

Under Horn’s plan, a family with three children and an income of $40,000 would receive $4,600, a single parent with two children making $30,000 would get $4,771, and a single worker with no children making $16,000 would receive a $780 tax credit.

On the state level, state Sen. Stephine Bice voted to cut the earned income tax credit in 2016.

Horn said if reelected, she’ll offer a bill to increasing the federal tax credit and expanding the number of households eligible.

The congresswoman said the plan would be paid for by reversing the 2018 tax cuts, eliminating tax loopholes for pharmaceutical companies and restoring the tax rate for foreign subsidiaries.

“Most of the benefit went to large corporations and wealthy individuals and families, working families were not the ones to receive those benefits,” Horn said. “Families were promised up to 9,000 in tax breaks, which they haven’t seen.”

Horn said leaders should still be at the table negotiating a second COVID-19 relief package. The congresswoman said she is working with a bipartisan “Problem Solvers Caucus” consisting of 25 Republicans and 25 Democrats, to advance negotiations.

“We laid out a comprehensive March to Common Ground plan to provide needed relief for workers, businesses, families, schools, and state and local governments during this crisis,” Horn said. “We know it’s possible to come to an agreement that is timely, targeted, and transparent because we’ve done it together.”
