The Humane Society of Tulsa's adoption center is closed and ready for repairs after a car slammed into their building.

Executive Director Macheal Ita said it happened Monday afternoon as she was on her way back to the office.

"We had someone that was kind enough to bring us a donation and when she went to park the car, she got the gas pedal and the brake pedal mistaken for each other and came right in," said Ita.

The force of the impact smashed bricks and shattered glass, even knocking their door off its hinge.

Ita said thankfully, the corner she hit was away from kennels holding both dogs and cats, and no employees were hurt. Ita said the damage is so severe they're temporarily having to close down the building.

"It's probably going to be a couple of weeks before all the repairs are finished so we'll probably be closed here for adoptions for a few weeks," said Ita.

Ita said they moved all their animals to another location that is more secure while repairs are being made.

It's something she said is a setback during a busy adoption season, and one where money is tight.

"While insurance will cover part of it, there are other expenses that insurance will not cover,” said Ita. “Obviously the animals that would typically be adopted out here are now going to be in our care for a little bit longer."
