A report of a man attacking his nephew with a wooden sword led to a shootout between the man and officers in Muskogee Thursday afternoon.

Officials have confirmed they have a suspect in custody following what was a shooting situation in Muskogee.

The investigation began around 12:30 when Muskogee police showed up at a home for a domestic report. Police said a man had assaulted his nephew with a wooden katana, which is a type of sword.

They said when two officers arrived, the suspect began shooting at them. That’s when police fired back and took cover behind their patrol unit. Then, other agencies came to help.

The Special Operations Team was also activated and an armored vehicle arrived to get the officers to safety.

Officer Lynn Hamlin, who was at the scene, said her department is grateful no one was hurt.

“One of our negotiators ultimately makes contact via cell phone with the suspect after some conversation back and forth with him," Hamlin said. "He agreed he’ll come out with his hands up. He does and he’s taken into custody without incident at that time."

The suspect's name has not been released, but police said he is a tribal member so the FBI will take over the case.
