A local cyclist lent a helping hand to a teenager from Michigan on Wednesday.

18-year-old Carter Newcomb is cycling to Los Angeles on Route 66 and passed through Tulsa. Carter is on a very tight budget, often sleeping in fields or parks and finding food and shelter when he can.

He came into the area with several bike issues, but quickly found some kind Oklahomans who helped him out.

Newcomb said he’s making the trek to raise awareness for mental health issues, something he struggles with himself.

“I really wanted to push that boundary and show people that you, even if you are struggling with this, you can do whatever it is you want to do,” Newcomb said.

Avid cyclist Mike Guillen helped Newcomb tune up his bike and even took him to the Gathering Place to show him the city.
