Mental Health Association Of Oklahoma Offering Race Relation Counseling

Friday, June 5th 2020, 5:38 am

The Mental Health Association of Oklahoma is starting support groups focused on race-related issues.

The support groups will be open to anyone, regardless of race.

Group officials say they’re getting a lot of interest from people traumatized after the video of George Floyd being killed by a Minneapolis police officer.

Diversity and inclusion specialist Carmen White Janak is leading the support group for the mental health association.

I asked her why this kind of outlet is needed and she says black people need a community where they can discuss their emotions on this topic and for non-black people. Many of them are also shaken and want to know how they can help.

“There are deep, deep bruises and soundings, contusions if you will on the bodies and emotions of black people in this country,” Janak said.

The groups will start June 15th.
