Oklahoma City Receiving More Than $100 Million From Federal CARES Act

Oklahoma City has received just over $114 million from the federal CARES Act. All of that money must be used to reimburse the city for expenses related to COVID-19.

That means none of that funding can be used to offset revenue shortfalls. So a projected strain on the 2021 budget will most likely still be there.

Slumping sales tax revenue from COVID-19 shutdowns has created a $35 million hole in the city's general fund.

The police and fire departments have been asked to cut just over three percent from their budget. Other departments will have to cut more than 11 percent.

According to the Oklahoman, about 600 OKC businesses applied for the pandemic relief from the city before the April 17 deadline.

Applicants who still had payroll during the coronavirus shutdowns could be eligible for cash or zero to low interest loans.

That will be decided by a disbursement committee. That committee is expected to deliver an update to the OKC City Council at Tuesday morning's meeting.

Funding could be awarded as early as this week.
