An 18-year-old, who was shot by a Midwest City police officer after he threatened him with a gun, has died at the hospital.

According to police, Charles A. Pettit, who pointed a loaded firearm at an officer, died Friday at OU Medical Center. Pettit had been in intensive care at the hospital since being shot by Midwest City police officer James Hill during the early morning hours of October 5.

Police said Pettit and another male suspect broke into a home on Peppertree Lane around 4 a.m. that day. Officer Hill responded and chased the two on foot across the south parking lot of Rose State College.

The other male suspect, who remains unidentified, ran towards the west and Pettit stopped on the east side of a dumpster near the aquatics center on the campus.

According to police, Officer Hill ordered Pettit multiple times to show his hands and Pettit pointed a loaded semi-automatic handgun at Officer Hill.  That's when Officer Hill shot Pettit several times.

Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater ruled the shooting justified and authorized by law.  Officer Hill was cleared internally following a shooting review board, which examines the officer’s actions based on existing policy and procedure.

“I am sympathetic for Pettit’s extended family but there are consequences when you don’t comply with lawful orders and try to kill a police officer,” Chief Brandon Clabes said.
