Kirk Humphreys, the former mayor of Oklahoma City and a current member of the OU Board of Regents, resigned his position on the board, effective the start of the spring semester.
Humphreys announced the decision at a special meeting called by the board on Thursday. The meeting comes after Humphreys made controversial comments about homosexuality on a Sunday morning public affairs program on KFOR-TV.

Humphreys has since apologized for the comments, and he listened to members of the university community Thursday morning, community leaders and students past and present, who detailed how his comments impacted them.
"I did not want my presence on the board to be a problem for the regents," he said during the meeting.
