This week on “Mitchell Talks: The News9 Sessions” Episode 28, Scott Mitchell and Aaron Brilbeck sit down with state Rep. Jason Dunnington (D) Oklahoma City about the Oklahoma Office of Management and Enterprise Services (OMES).

The agency recently asked the state Legislature for an emergency $16 million appropriation.

“Yes, it does seem like a bombshell,” Dunnington said. “Wasn't it just at this time last year that the health department was saying, '$30 million or we’re letting people go?' And they ended up letting people go, and now what do we have? We have a big lawsuit.”

News9’s Aaron Brilbeck asked, “What I’m confused about is we have a budget surplus. You all were able to increase taxes quite a bit to fund teacher pay increases (and get an) education increase. We’ve got more money than we’ve had in a long time. We’re in a much better position financially than we’ve been in a very very long time. How is it nobody knew about this until last week?”

Dunnington responded, “I don’t disagree with anything you just said, and I think that’s the real question. How is it that we haven’t known about this. When you dig into what OMES is saying, they’ve been undercharging other agencies because everyone was kind of tightening their belts and struggling a bit and they had done this so long that they had this big deficit and had to cover these costs. But, again, that just seems like mismanagement altogether.”

Dunnington also talked about the need to expand Medicaid the way Kansas just did. Find out what Kansas did differently on Mitchell Talks: The News9 Sessions.
