In response to the statewide shortage and difficulties recruiting certified librarians, Oklahoma City Public Schools created a “grow our own school librarian” program.
The program cultivates current teachers into library media specialists. While getting the position's required master's degree, they get experience on the job.
“I had tons of support from all these other wonderful people to help me with anything I needed,” said Dana Chappell. “And when I finished there were others that came up and we helped them along the way as well.”
District officials reported seeing success with the program since it was put into effect in 2000.
