Thousands of volunteers are taking part in United Way's Day of Caring Friday, September 14. They're performing service projects throughout Tulsa.

Just a few hours into the project, volunteers from Macy's have already put in a bunch of blood, sweat and tears on this Day of Caring.

Volunteers started the day with breakfast and a rally at the downtown library before heading to their projects. The United Way says they have 5,000 volunteers working on 400 projects across the city.

The Macy's employees are spending the day working with the non-profit group "Up with Trees" on an outdoor classroom at Hamilton Elementary.

Nikki Farmer and the rest of her team had a quick tutorial on landscaping - then they went straight to work.

"We're putting some rocks in the riverbed so that way, when they get the river ready for the outdoor classroom, it'll be really nice and clear," said Nikki Farmer, a season trainer with Macy's.

This is the 27th year the United Way has hosted the Day of Caring.
