Oklahoma City's first-ever public celebration of a plant-based lifestyle was held at the Myriad Gardens today.

VegFest OKC took place from 9 am to 5 pm.

“I think my goal when we first started was to have 500 people show up. And within the first couple of months, when all of the vendors had

signed up, and we had 75 volunteers, we were like oh my gosh this is going to be way beyond our wildest dreams,” Emma Ryan, VegFest Co-Chair, said.

VegFest is a worldwide festival that was started by the Vegan Society, which is a national organization based in the United States.

The first VegFest started back in 1991, and it happens in more than 30 states.

It is now reaching Oklahoma, thanks to Emma Ryan and her team.

“So we contacted the national organization, and just said 'how do we get one in Oklahoma City?' and they said 'well you have to host it.'.

So here we are. We put together at team and decided that the city was ready for it,” Ryan said.

The non-profit event highlighted how to live meat-free, and other ways to create a healthy lifestyle through fitness.

“To me it's a gathering around the city for people who are looking for a healthier option,” Ryan said.

VegFest offered demonstrations by vegan and non-vegan speakers, and wellness coaches were also in attendance, giving free classes.

The 9 to 5 event featured 50 vendors and food trucks, and provided many fun options for the kids as well.

“I think people are slowly waking up to eating better. Eating real food, and working out more. And I just want it to promote that. And I want to highlight all of these amazing businesses in Oklahoma City who are doing those things,” Ryan said.
