As thousands of students head back to school across the metro, the emphasis again is placed on education.
Lock down or lock out drills have always been a common thing in schools but they are now becoming more important with the rise in school shootings.
District leaders say you can expect to see those drills this year in addition to fire and severe weather drills
All the districts we spoke with, have, or are transitioning to an electronic check in system requiring photo ID for all visitors.
Additionally camera surveillance systems are becoming more and more common.
Law enforcement Offices are also playing a bigger role in schools in places like Bethany this year
"We're always looking for new ways to imporve the safety of our students one of the things we have is a full time resource officer this year in the past we've worked with bethany police dept to make sure we have an officer aroudn our building at all times," said Reuben Bellows, Earl Harris Elementary Principal.
For more information on school security or visitor check in policy, you are encouraged to contact your child's school.
