Metro Man Found in "Homemade Bunker" Charged With Manufacturing Explosive Device

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY -

A man has been arrested following a lengthy investigation at a home off Texoma Drive and South May Avenue starting Tuesday morning.

Investigators say 41-year old Kirk David Blue is jailed in Oklahoma County on a charge of Manufacturing an Improvised Explosive Device.

The case began around 6:20 a.m. after a suspicious fire at a vacant home according to Oklahoma City Fire officials.

Investigators said small spot fires in the structure point to a case of arson and asked neighbors to be on the lookout for a person of interest.

A few hours later, a detective got a call from someone living on the block who spotted a man near the home.

Investigators say when they showed up, Kirk Blue ran into the house and refused to speak with them.

Soon, his family members arrived and firemen say they were then allowed to search the property.

“They came back out and told our fire investigators that the person had gone into a tunnel that is known to be in this home,” said Benny Fulkerson of the Oklahoma City Fire Department.

The tunnel found in the home was located in one of the rooms and crawled several feet underneath the property.

Firemen said Blue was covered in gasoline, lying in the tunnel on top of a suspicious device that appeared to be a pipe bomb.

He was carried to an EMSA unit, and then the bomb squad responded to the property.

Some neighbors say they’re not surprised by the criminal activity, while others don’t believe the family had any connection to what was found in the house.

“They have been there for 20 or so years, and never had any problems that disturbed the neighbors or anything,” said Jerry Jefferson, who lives nearby.

Police confirm the home was under investigation back in December.

In that case, another suspicious device was found strapped to a gas line.

The results from that investigation are still pending, and no one was ever arrested.

Jail documents reveal Blue told detective that he had “1,000 IEDs and that he made them to kill and protect himself from the "cartel" Feds, Police, and Green Berets."

Blue does have a criminal history.

Court records link him to charges of burglary, preventing a witness from attending court, possession of a firearm after a felony conviction and larceny of a vehicle.

He is being held in the Oklahoma County Jail on a $300,000 bond and was arraigned today.
