A man claiming to have shot and killed someone inside his metro home is being treated at a local hospital.

Police swarmed his SW metro home only to find the man made the entire story up.

Police don't believe this was a hoax, but rather the man suffering from a mental health episode.

“I heard what I thought was two gunshots,” said neighbor Frank Masters.

“It's like oh my gosh, what's going on?,” said another neighbor Mary Midgley.

Oklahoma City police officer Travis Vernier said officers were responding to reports of a man armed with a rifle.

And while police didn't initially see anyone, they weren't sure if someone was aiming at them.

“As officers arrived on scene they literally hear shots being fired,” said  Vernier.

“That's when we heard the cops with all the gun drawn saying come out of this house with your hands up,” said neighbor Brandi Battocchio.

A short time later an unarmed man emerged from the home, claiming to be the victim of a home invasion.

“That person claimed that armed burglars had broken into home and he had shot one of them,” said Vernier.

The man told police at least one of the burglars was still inside.

“He claimed that someone was dead inside the home that he had actually killed them,” said Vernier.

After more than an hour of waiting and calling for the burglars to come out, to no avail, police went inside only to find it empty.

“There's no blood, there's no evidence there was a struggle inside the home,” said Vernier.

Police said the man had started to fill his home with gas by turning on the stove. He also damaged his home after firing several shots inside.

The rifle was found in the backyard of the home.
