The Oklahoma baseball team dropped its first game at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional on Sunday with a 13-5 loss to Mississippi State at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla. The Sooners fell to 38-24, while the Bulldogs improved to 34-26.

The win by Mississippi State forces a winner-take-all contest for Monday between the Sooners and Bulldogs with a berth in the Super Regionals on the line.

Mississippi State scored first as the Bulldogs used a sacrifice fly by catcher Dustin Skelton to plate third baseman Justin Foscue, who led off the second with a double. In the third, Mississippi State sent 12 batters to the plate, scoring eight runs off six hits and an OU error to build a 9-0 lead.

OU starting pitcher Devon Perez (5-6) lasted just 2.1 innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits, while recording two strikeouts and one walk to take the loss.

The Sooners scratched a run in the third on Kyle Mendenhall’s 10th sacrifice fly of the season. In the sixth, OU cut the Bulldogs’ lead down to 9-2 as Cade Harris’ RBI double down the right field plated one with two outs. Harris’ 23 doubles are tied for the seventh most by a Sooner in OU single-season history. The junior finished 2-for-4, homering in the eighth and recording two RBI.

Blake Brewster, Thomas Hughes and Justin Mitchell combined for six of OU’s 12 hits. Brewster doubled and finished 2-for-4. Hughes continued his hot streak with fifth consecutive multi-hit game. The junior was 2-for-4 with a run scored and is hitting .615 (8-for-13) in the Tallahassee Regional. Mitchell picked up a pair of singles to extend his hitting streak to five games.

Domenic DeRenzo belted his second home run of the season with a two-run blast to deep left field in the bottom of the seventh.

Mississippi State right-handed reliever Cole Gordon (4-3) earned the win, tossing six innings out of the bullpen. Gordon surrendered four runs on seven hits and struck 10 in relief. Mississippi State starter Denver McQuary pitched three innings, giving up five hits and one earned run.

For the second straight night, weather affected the start time of OU’s game. Saturday’s game was delayed nearly four hours due to a rain storm, while Sunday’s first pitch was delayed 90 minutes due impending weather near the Tallahassee area.

Oklahoma and Mississippi State will face off against Monday at noon CT. The winner will advance to take on Vanderbilt in the NCAA Super Regional.
