Lewis Avenue at the Broken Arrow Expressway is reopened to traffic after city workers hit a natural gas line early Tuesday, causing a leak.

The leak resulted in Lewis being closed in both directions.

Tulsa Fire Department said a water department crew working on a 12-inch water line accidentally cut the gas line at about 1:30 a.m. at the eastbound entrance to the Broken Arrow Expressway. As a precaution, Lewis was closed in both directions.

ONG workers shut off the leak just before 5:30 a.m. The Hazmat team said everyone was determined to get the leak shut down and the street reopened before the morning rush hour.

Captain Alan Barnes said every car that drives by a gas leak is a potential ignition source.

"You've got your catalytic converter, your exhaust pipes, your alternators ... those are all ignition sources so you don't want that going through your cloud of gas," said Barnes.

TFD was also concerned about businesses losing customers, especially Braum's. The restaurant was able to open pretty much on time.

Oklahoma Natural Gas crews are now working to make a final repair to the gas line, and it could take several hours to fix it.
