News 9 Flashback: Bridge Creek Seniors Graduate Days After May 3, 1999, Tornado

Posted: Updated:
BRIDGE CREEK, Oklahoma -

It was supposed to be the best time of their lives, but the May 3, 1999, tornado wiped out the last few weeks of the school year for Bridge Creek High School seniors.

Former News 9 reporter Kym Koch had the story, and we're re-posting it as a News 9 Flashback story.

Let's go back to 1999. Bridge Creek High School had become a disaster recovery center, so graduation ceremonies had to be held in a southwest Oklahoma City church. Four of the 59 seniors lost their homes in the tornado, and Bridge Creek lost 680 homes overall.

After the tornado, school officials canceled classes for the rest of the year.

Eleven people in the Bridge Creek community died in the tornado.
