Suspects often think they can escape from police by simply running away, but it's usually just a matter of time until they're captured, especially with the help of K-9 units.

One Broken Arrow burglary suspect found that out the hard way just recently.

That suspect ran from police and took them through a heavily wooded area. But he was no match for the K-9 who has more than 480 hours of training.

Broken Arrow Police Department K-9 Officer Marque Baldwin and his dog Jireh train for all types of scenarios.

"In the sense of being a professional athlete we want to expose the dogs to that type of game so when [It’s] game time … the dog is able to locate the suspect," said Baldwin.

Thursday, they were called into action to help track a suspect who ran away from police. It started just before 2:30 p.m. when someone recognized the man as a possible burglary suspect from a restaurant in Tulsa. That man then ran from police.

"I dropped what I was doing, I immediately got on the radio and advised them that I was already available and I responded to the location with my partner Jireh," said Baldwin.

Baldwin and Jireh began tracking the suspect through the woods.

"Jireh and I went ahead and initiated the track there and went into some really thick cover and continued on to the tracking sequence until we were able to apprehend the suspect," Baldwin said.

It's scenarios like this that K-9 Officer Baldwin and his dog train for. Jireh is a 6-year-old German Sheppard who has been on the streets since July of 2014. He is trained in both Narcotic detection as well as being a utility dog.

"We are able to use the dog with regards to tracking area searches, building searches, evidence recovery, and aggression control," said Baldwin.

"It's the job of a lifetime. You're actually utilizing skills that you have to track down a fleeing criminal. You're protecting the community from any further harm".

Broken Arrow's drone and TPD's helicopter also assisted in the arrest.
