Claremore students headed back to class Monday after being out for two weeks because of the school shutdown, and the the community came together to celebrate teachers when they returned.

A community rally happened at Will Rogers Junior High Monday to welcome teachers who have been out of class for the past two weeks because of the walkout.

Students and parents held signs to show their appreciation for their teachers as they walked into school for the first time since the shutdown.

"Want to say thank you to them for all that they've done, and all that they do, the things that they were able to change for the future of our education," parent Mandy Large said.

Students said they were happy to get back to class and into a normal routine so they could finish strong before the summer.

The gesture left teachers smiling and happy to see their students.

"They were saying thank you. They were saying they were glad to be back, hugging the kids saying that they missed them," Large said.

To make up for time lost during the walkout, the district is extending the school days by 30 minutes until summer break.

Claremore's last day is May 25.

Rally organizers said Cedar Point Church is providing lunch to all the junior high teachers and support staff Monday afternoon.
