The man shot and killed by Owasso Police has been identified as Duane Preciado, a man who spoke to News On 6 about gun safety in February while at a local gun range.

Owasso Police say they were called to a home in the 15100 block of East 108th Place Wednesday night, March 21, after a report of a disturbance. When two officers got to the home, Preciado came out of the house with an AK-47 rifle and a pistol, according to Deputy Chief of Police Jason Woodruff.

"Both officers yelled commands for him to drop the weapon," the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.

"The officers then backed up to their patrol cars for cover as they continued yelling commands. Preciado began advancing toward the officers while making threatening comments. Both officers fired their weapons."

The 39-year-old man died a short time later at a Tulsa hospital.

Preciado's family told News On 6 he was a 16-year veteran of the United States Air Force who suffered from post traumatic stress disorder. Anchor Brian Dorman interviewed Preciado while he was teaching his fiance to shoot.

"It's important to know you can defend yourself, defend your house and your family," he said. He said he hoped what his fiance learned at the shooting range could someday save her life if needed.

"Home defense is very important, I think, in any family, just in case with the crime rate very high," he said.

Family members say Preciado was a good man, and they are still trying to understand what happened.
