OSU Quarterback Commit Named Texas Gatorade Player Of The Year

Posted: Updated:
DENTON, Texas -

Oklahoma State quarterback commit Spencer Sanders was named Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Texas on Monday. The award distinguishes each state’s best high school football player, recognizing athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior has led the Denton Ryan Raiders to a 14-0 record with a berth in the 5A Division 1 semifinals coming up on Friday night. Sanders is a consensus four-star recruit and is ranked as the No. 7 dual threat quarterback in the nation by ESPN. He’s been committed to the Cowboys since October 2016.

Sanders has thrown for 3,621 yards and 51 touchdowns with just six interceptions so far. He’s added 1,220 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground.

“Spencer Sanders is just a special player, there’s no other way to describe him,” said Billy Miller, head coach at Denton Ryan. “He throws the ball better than just about anyone I’ve ever been around, and you can’t tackle him when he runs it. He also shows great leadership, great knowledge of the game … every intangible you can think of.”

With Mason Rudolph graduating to the NFL, Sanders will be in a quarterback competition at OSU in 2018 with senior Taylor Cornelius, redshirt sophomore Keondre Wudtee and redshirt freshman Jelani Woods.
