For the second time in the first three weeks of the 2017-18 season, Oklahoma freshman guard Trae Young was named Big 12 Player of the Week on Monday. Young is the first freshman in Big 12 history to earn the honor twice in the first three weeks of the season.

Young helped lead the Sooners to a 2-1 week at PK80 in Portland, Ore., averaging 34.7 points, 6.7 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 2.3 steals. He shot 30-of-58 (.517) from the field, 11-of-28 (.393) from 3-point range and 33-of-35 (.943) from the foul line.

The 6-foot-2 guard was the leading scorer among the 16 elite Nike schools competing in PK80 and was named to the “Victory” bracket’s all-tournament team.

Young scored at least 28 points in all three games in Portland, including a 43-point performance in a 90-80 win over Oregon on Sunday. He shot 11-of-22 from the field, 4-of-11 from 3-point range and 17-of-18 from the foul line while adding seven assists, four rebounds and two steals.

His 43 points are the most scored in NCAA Division I this season and are the second-most by a Sooner in the past 23 seasons – second only to Buddy Hield’s 46 points in triple overtime against Kansas on Jan. 4, 2016.

Young is the 15th Sooner to score 40 points in a game, but just the second to do so as a freshman. Wayman Tisdale is the only OU freshman to score more in a game with outings of 51, 46 and 44 points in the 1982-83 season.

Young’s week also included performances of 28 points in PK80's opening round against Arkansas and 33 points versus Portland in the second round.

On the season, Young leads the Big 12 in scoring at 28.2 points per game and is the only player in the league averaging over 20 points. Nationally, Young’s scoring average ranks second only to Femi Olujobi of North Carolina A&T (28.3).

The Sooners are back at home to face North Texas on Thursday, Nov. 30.
