Thanksgiving is Thursday and firefighters have strong opinions when it comes to cooking your bird.

Smoke it, bake it, or grill it, but just don't fry it.

That's the message from firefighters, and for good reason.

This video shows the results of a turkey fry gone wrong.

"We recommend if you want a fried turkey to have someone do that for you at a restaurant. That's what they do for a business. They have all the safety precautions. They are aware of all the things that go on, let them burden that risk," Oklahoma City fire Battalion Chief Benny Fulkerson said.

But if you insist on frying your own holiday bird, the fire department recommends the following:

  • Stay away from the house, set up the turkey fryer more than 10 feet away from your home and keep children and pets away.
  • Place the fryer on a flat, level surface.
  • Also, make sure your turkey is completely thawed and dry. Extra water will cause the oil to bubble over starting a fire.
  • Monitor the oil temperature.
  • Have a fire extinguisher ready at all times.
