There are over a dozen ambassador job openings with the Oklahoma City Police Department. The department needs 36 part-time ambassadors to fill the staff, but only have 23 at this time.

“This job is so important because you may be the first contact people have of Oklahoma City,” said Gary Hurt.

Hurt has been an ambassador for 15 years. It’s his post-retirement job. He was an art teacher and a counselor at Midwest City High School 30 years.

As an ambassador, Hunt walks about five miles per shift. Some ambassadors roll on Segway’s. They stay within the Bricktown and downtown area.

Hunt said the main part of his job is to help locals and tourists with questions, directions, or any help they may need. Often, the responsibilities include directing event traffic. Most importantly, Hunt said the ambassadors act as an extra set of eyes and ears for the police officers.

He’s had instances where he called police during a violent situation. He’s also been able to reunite families that lost each other in the area.

“The more people you can have out on the street looking and keeping eyes open, the better it is here,” said Hunt.

He helps keep the downtown area safe.
