Luther Student Expelled After "Hit List" Found

Posted: Updated:
LUTHER, Oklahoma -

Luther police are searching for a middle school student they say wrote a "hit list." Police said the names of 22 adults and Luther students are on the list and officers were sent to the school for added security. However, some parents are angry the school district never notified them of the possible danger.

“We didn’t get a text,” said Shavonne Longley. “A phone call or anything.”

Longley said her 8th grade son told her about the threatening note Thursday when he came home from school and that Luther police were at his school. Longley took him out of school and plans to keep him home until she feels it's safe.

“I was upset that I had to hear it from my son,” said Longley. “Had he not told me, I would have found out on a post on Facebook.”

Another student told school staff about the "hit list." The district's Superintendent, Barry Gunn said the student responsible for writing the list was expelled Wednesday and police officers were added for security the next day. Police are now investigating and have the note that contains the names of students and adults.

“He made comments to certain people, I’m going to kill you,” said Officer Tony Walker, Luther Police Department. “Which we have them coming in to fill out witness statement and give testimonies on all that.”

Police said the 8th grade suspect has not been located and they are actively looking for him. Meanwhile, parents feel they are not getting enough information from the district.

“It’s a small town,” said Longley. “So everybody knows everybody. We do know the kid but we weren’t away that they had not caught him.”

“So were they going to wait until someone got shot to let us know?” said Longley.

The Luther superintendent said if the juvenile suspect is not caught by Monday they will continue to have a heightened security presence at the middle school.
