The Boys and Girls club says someone has been collecting donations door-to-door in their name. But the organization says they aren’t getting the money.

On Friday evening, the suspected scammer was making the rounds in the Gatewood neighborhood near 23rd and Penn, telling neighbors he was selling candy to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club.

“I had neighbors call me and share with me that someone was doing this,” said long time Boys and Girls Club employee AJ Johnson. Unfortunately for the scammer, he lives in that neighborhood.

“He just said you won’t believe this,” Johnson recalled of the conversation with his neighbor.  AJ says his savvy neighbor caught on quickly to what was really going on.

“He said it was for the east side boys and girls club and we don’t have an east side boys and girls club.”

The Boys and Girls Club president contacted News 9 to spread the word.

“This guy’s is a fraud and I don’t want any of our community friends and supporters to be duped by him,” said Jane Sutter, the President of the Boys and Girls Club.

Sutter says this type of thing has happened before. She wants everyone to know they never solicit donations door-to-door.

“This is not the way we go about raising funds for the work that we do.”

Sutter encourages anyone who experiences something like this to call police.  Also if you do want to donate to the Boys and Girls Club you can do so on their web site.
