Phone Scam Going Around Rogers County

The Rogers County Sheriff's Office is warning people about a phone call scam where callers pretend to be deputies and ask for money.  

The sheriff's office said so far they've had three people report the call.

They said one person even gave the scammer $1,500.

"They were advising people that they had warrants for their arrest, and that they needed to pay money in lieu of going to jail," said Sgt. Wes Jones.

They said the caller asks people to get a green dot card, a prepaid money card, then asks for the card number over the phone.

Deputies said if you miss and you call back the number they leave, you get a recorded message, saying "Hello, you've reached the Rogers County Sheriff's Office Civil Processing Division. If this is an emergency please hang up and dial 911. If you are returning a call for one of our deputies, please leave your name, number and a detailed message and one of our deputies will return your call, in the order it was received."

The sheriff's office said this is not them and that they will never contact anyone over the phone, or ask for money for any reason.

"A lot of times people will target the elderly, because sometimes they're more believable when something like that happens," Jones said.

We called the number and after getting the same recording, left a message.

The sheriff's office said if you receive a call like that, just hang up.

Deputies don't know yet where the call is coming from because they are using a messaging application that's difficult to trace.
