The Woody Guthrie Center is hosting a new exhibit all about John Denver and his life inside and outside of music.

When you think about John Denver what comes to mind? 70s pop star - during his career he recorded maybe 300 songs, most of them he wrote.

The 70s was his decade.

Maybe his hair cut? Maybe the glasses?

Deana McCloud is the executive director of the Woody Guthrie Center and is excited the center is hosting the exhibit.

It's called Rhymes and Reasons: The Music of John Denver.

But it’s a lot more than music.

"Something about John Denver speaks to us. I love that people get who he was and respect him, first of all for his song writing, but who he was as a person and what he represented," McCloud said.

He was an environmentalist and humanitarian and his songs reflect that. The exhibit includes some hand-written lyrics.

He was an activist; in 1985 he testified before a Senate committee opposing censorship and labeling of rock music.

"He won just about every award a singer song writer could win," McCloud said.

Many of those are in the exhibit too, along with guitars he played and outfits he wore.

It's a treasury of a music icon.
