If you've ever tried, unsuccessfully, to attract hummingbirds to your yard, it might be because one Rogers County couple treats them so well.

Georgie and Kenny Hawkins moved to their farm in 1985 and have been feeding generations of hummingbirds ever since.

"We put out one feeder and that wasn't enough, so we put out another," Kenny said.

Now, they regularly put out six or seven feeders and fill them every day.

Georgie said you start putting the feeders out mid-March until the middle of September.

They are up to using 40 pounds of sugar a week to make the nectar. Plus extra sugar if they want some sweets for themselves.

The hummingbirds hang out in a crepe myrtle in the shade, then, every few minutes they head for the feeders. That goes on all day every day.

Georgie and Kenny have no idea how many there are, but it's dozens. It's become a responsibility.

"I don't know what would happen if we stopped feeding them,” Kenny said.

And they don't want to know.

Whenever they are both out of town, the couple arranges for relatives or friends to fill the hummingbird feeders.
