The city of Bixby just acquired a piece of land that puts them one step closer to improving safety and traffic conditions around Memorial Bridge.

People in Bixby say the bridge is a constant source of car accidents and traffic backups.

So, the city has been working for three years to purchase a piece of land right next to Washington Irving Park.

It's a sand plant now, but in a little over a year city officials hope to begin transforming it into a parking lot for park visitors.

The plan is to add a few more roadways under the Memorial Bridge so cars don't have to cross two lanes of traffic when crossing the street.

But developing this area is only one piece of a much bigger project Bixby voters decided on when they approved Vision 2025.

"They told us they wanted to do river development, make our river more attractive and enchanted, our downtown and make our downtown more attractive,” said Bixby Mayor John Easton. “So, this is the city delivering on what we promised.”

But for now, traffic is still a struggle in the area.

Friday is the first night of the Bixby Barbecue and Blues Festival in the park.

Police are urging drivers to be cautious on the roads if you're heading through the area this weekend.
