Delaware County Amber Alert Canceled, Children Found Safe

An Amber Alert has been canceled for 20-month-old Adelyn Keener and 2-month-old Maxwell Keener after the Delaware County Sheriff's office says the children and their mother, Sarah Jane Lewis, 31, were located in Arkansas. 

The sheriff's office says they were located Thursday afternoon just across the Oklahoma state line, and they are now in the custody of the Department of Human Services.

 News On 6 reporter Katiera Winfrey spoke to Lewis who said she didn't realize there was an Amber Alert out for the children. When she heard about the alert, she contacted her attorney who made arrangements with the Sheriff's Office for her to come back with her son and daughter.

Lewis said she was a victim of abuse and was on her way to a women's shelter with her children when the alert was issued Thursday morning.

"Extremely afraid for the lives of my children and myself," she said. "I thought I was doing the right thing trying to get us into a woman's shelter."

The sheriff said deputies went to Lewis' home to take the children by court order. The order said the children were in imminent danger because both parents suffered with drug use.

By the time deputies got there, Lewis and the kids were already gone. The sheriff said they are thankful to the media and Highway Patrol for working so fast to get the word out.

The children are in good condition, according to authorities. DHS is still handling the case as far as the children are concerned, but the sheriff said based on what they have so far, it will not be considered a kidnapping case.
