Weekend House Fire Leads To Homicide Investigation

A woman and her 7-year-old son were killed after a weekend fire on Oklahoma City’s northwest side, and police say it was no accident.

Justin Deemy just misses his friend.

"Like he would ride his tractor down here, his like little mini tractor, and I fixed it for him a couple times,” Deemy said. “But I got my own tractor just like his and he was like so excited and we were like driving around for a couple days before it broke."

Keagon Bruce, 7, was pulled Saturday from the burning home on NW 80, but he died at the hospital. 

His mother, Julia Mason, was found dead inside. Police say they had been killed.

"Both of them had significant injuries, injuries consistent with homicide that appeared to have occurred before the fire was set," said Oklahoma City police Master Sgt. Gary Knight.

Neighbors said Keagon wasn’t the kind of kid to play video games. He wanted to be outside, climbing trees, riding bikes and making friends.

"It was Nerf guns and inventing stuff,” said neighbor Bill Hodgins. “He was in front before trying to chop down a tree once. You know, he came down here with me and my friends which, you know, I’m 47 years old and he's seven and he's out here having Nerf gun fights with us and stuff."

Keegan was a student at nearby Nichols Hills Elementary School. County records show the home was owned by Elizabeth Mason of Woodway, Texas. 

Police are trying to figure out who would do such a thing. Neighbors just want to know why.

"I was just shocked, because I don't know how anybody would get themselves to do that," Deemy said.

Oklahoma City police said they do not have any suspects in the case yet.
