Tips On Preparing For Grueling Winter Weather

Around the house ahead of this winter blast, there are small things you can do to gear up for grueling temperatures.

John Burdin with Plumb Crazy Plumbing said you can drip your faucet when its below freezing to help keep the water moving in your pipes. And you can also open your cabinets on exterior walls to let the room temperature in.

Burdin also recommended checking around the outside of your house--unhooking hoses and protecting anything with a connection to the cold.

“Don’t beat yourself up. Even doing everything and having the perfect house, if the winds hit it just right, you could experience freezing,” he said.

If it happens, he said know where your water shut-off is and try to monitor the home while it thaws.

For those who are worried about your plants surviving the cold this weekend, Melissa Burgett with TLC Garden Center says hopefully you’ve been watering them well. “In the soil, if there’s no water, there’s no buffer to protect the roots. With that water, there’s a type of buffering that protects,” she said.

Another important reminder as we prepare for the brutal cold is to bring your pets inside.
