It was a dangerous night for drivers across the Oklahoma city area as three deaths were reported on the roadways since Thursday evening.
AAA is predicting more than 900,000 Oklahomans will travel over the year-end holiday period. With a higher risk of wet or icy roads in our region, it's even more important for drivers to be safe.
Thursday evening shows exactly why. More than 100 accidents were reported across the metro area since then.
At around 7:45 p.m., Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers confirmed one person was killed in a crash at I-240 and Penn. Around 8:45 p.m., troopers confirmed a traffic death at I-40 and Garth Brooks Boulevard. At 9 p.m., OHP confirmed another death at I-35 and Hefner.
We may be getting a slight break in the freezing cold temperatures today but a winter weather advisory for the Oklahoma City area is in effect until Sunday morning.
The Department of Transportation recommends drivers:
- Stay at leat 200 feet behind road clearing equipment to allow them enough room to maneuver.
- Allow extra braking space between vehicles.
- Watch for "black ice."
- Be patient and plan ahead.
