There is a lot of damage at Wanette Public Schools to both the elementary and high school buildings.
On Sunday, elementary secretary Erica Owen went into work to finish some paperwork, but she instead walked into a vandalized building.
“They pulled my door off,” said Owen. “Unfortunately, this is what I walked into.”
Papers were spread all over the elementary office, desks were broken and glass was shattered. Owen continued to walk through the halls only to discover worse damage.
Computer screens and laptops were beat up. Multiple windows and doors were broken from forced entry in both schools.
“It’s sad. It breaks my heart that these kids are out of school because some other children decided to come in here and just vandalize and cause destruction,” said Owen.
Golf balls and a baseball bat were found as part of evidence. Owen said it could be Wednesday before it is safe to resume class.
Faculty and staff spent Monday cleaning up as the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office continued to investigate the crime.
Lt. Travis Sullivan said they have collected a lot of evidence and he is confident they will find the perpetrators. He said nothing major was stolen, but many expensive items were damaged.
“Any information whatsoever that you hear, please let us know so we can follow up on it,” said Sullivan.
