Four-hundred and sixty-six foster children will be getting new toys for Christmas from firefighters. It’s an annual tradition that the Oklahoma City Fire Department has continued for 10 years.

On Thursday, firefighters loaded up a large truck with almost 1,000 toys. Fire Chief Keith Bryant said they sponsored 30 more children than last year.

“We know how important that is for children to wake up Christmas morning with their wish list from Santa Claus filled,” said Bryant.

Lisa Feist with OK Foster Wishes is grateful that first responders are going above and beyond for the foster children. She said the firefighters’ contributions help out a lot, but there are still many children who may be empty handed this holiday season.

“As of this morning, we still have 352 children who we don’t have covered yet,” said Feist. She said donations were down this year. On top of that, an average of 12 to 14 children are brought into custody every day in Oklahoma. The need continues to grow and every donation counts.
